Scouring wool is an essential process. It’s the procedure that takes greasy wool and turns it into the luscious fibre that covers the decks of cruise ships. It’s the first step in making the woollen clothes that we wear.

You could say that scouring is just the process of washing wool. However, it’s a very long and powerful procedure that we do entirely in-house. And, because it’s completed in-house, it allows us to offer you fast, flexible delivery times that can be sent straight from our factory.

The process starts when we’re delivered the raw wool straight from a sheep’s back. It arrives at us with contaminants.

To make this raw wool a usable product, we run it through our industrial scouring machines. These machines then sort and sift the wool through three different sections of warm water. Each section gradually makes it cleaner by raking and washing the dirt away. Finally, the wool is passed through a series of detection systems and de-dusting processes where the product is blended before being packed.

The best part of this process isn’t the way that it efficiently cleans wool. The part that we’re most proud of is the fact that we have made it environmentally sustainable. The dirt that is washed from the wool is turned into compost for rhubarb farms, extracted metal is recycled, and the water is treated in conjunction with our local water services company. The pride that we take in our environmental impact has earned us our GOT’S certificate and the full procedure has been designed to meet ISO14001 standards.
