Company Profiles

200 years of history summed up in a few minutes.

You might have come across us without realising. This is because we’re not one company. We’re a group of businesses dedicated to serving you. The wool industry is huge. We decided that each aspect of it needed an individual level of focus. That’s why we created multiple companies rather than having one team of people that tried to do everything.

Even though the names are different, the business, brand and ethos are still the same. We just focus on different areas. No matter which company you work with, one thing will always remain consistent. That is that you will receive a repeatable, reliable service that you can trust.

Dewsbury-based Standard Wool consists of four companies. They all come together to service different parts of the wool trading industry. They make up one of the worlds leading wool trading businesses. The title “Standard Wool” is used to incorporate our entire group.

The group has customers in more than 30 countries. Specialising in sourcing, supplying, and processing wools from the UK and overseas, we employ more than 100 people across the renowned textile region of West Yorkshire in the UK. We also have staff overseas in locations including New Zealand, Ireland, China, and Chile.

Our group’s combined experience and expertise remain virtually unrivalled. The individual company origins date back to the 18th century and in some cases, our workforce stretches back many generations.

Jacomb Hoare & Co is a Dewsbury-based business. It’s the trading division of Standard Wool’s successful South American operation based in Chile. They’re one of the world’s oldest and best-respected wool firms with a history dating back more than 200 years. This company was instrumental in establishing Chile as a key location in world wool production.

Today, they handle the trading and processing operations of Standard Wool (Chile) S.A. They do this by using their unique combination of industry experience, knowledge, and influence. Their goal is to ensure customers enjoy the same superior products, competitive pricing and great service that helped originally establish the business many years ago.

Thomas Chadwick & Sons is another Standard Wool company with an impressive record stretching back from 1864. In 1987 the company became an integral part of the Standard Wool group. Since then it has provided the business with scouring and storage from the same Dewsbury premises it has occupied since 1903.

Today, state-of-the-art technologies enable the company to process roughly 13.5 million kilograms every year, in an operation employing over 30 highly skilled workers.

The company’s superb environmental policies and commitment to best practices have earned it the coveted ISO9001 Quality Management accreditation in Wool Trading and Processing as well as ISO14001 Environmental Management accreditation – the only UK company to achieve both standards.

Soil Association accreditation and the Red Tractor certificate is a further demonstration of this market-leading company’s unrivalled competency and commitment to excellence in every aspect of its operations.

Standard Wool (NZ) is the division of the business responsible for sourcing wool in New Zealand. Since its beginnings in the 1970s, the company has established an impressive foothold not only within New Zealand’s wool auction system but within the country’s wool trade as a dependable and transparent partner.

Today, Standard Wool (NZ) operates as a successful niche business employing a small but highly trained team who specialise in wool buying, wool scouring and international shipping.

Our Chinese operation in Nanjing was opened in the early 1990s and provides customer relations and sales office serving our Chinese client base and specialising in the British wool business. The office manager has more than 20 years of experience in the wool industry.
